Official 2011 Star Kids Modeling Contest Winners!

Summer is turning the corner into Fall, and with the changing seasons came the end of our 8^th annual Star Kids Modeling Contest. We raised an awesome donation for the UK Children’s Hospital through the contest, thanks to all of our participants and generous sponsors.

We are beyond excited for this year’s group of winners: there were 21 category winners and two overall winners for each age group (0-3yr olds, and 4-14 yr olds). Our Star Kids Winners joined us at Kids Place last Tuesday night where we revealed the winners, handed out prizes and goody bags, and celebrated the money raised for charity!

Last week, my wonderful little boy turned one! It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything about Wells on the blog & I couldn’t resist updating all of our reader’s on his latest milestone.

A few weeks before his big day,

July 25^th, Wells took his first step and almost immediately became a pro at walking. He’s so inquisitive now! He attempts to get into everything- cabinets, magazines, drawers & basically anything else within his reach.

His vocabulary now consists of DaDa, MaMa, NaNa & light (which he pronounces “ight”) I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anything other baby having “light” as one of their first words, but then again, he isn’t just any other baby : )

He’s funny, adorable, stubborn, smart & spoiled rotten, & I wouldn’t change a single thing about him for the world.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WELLS! We love you!

Little Girl... Big Voice!

We discovered little Miss Lilly earlier this week when she visited Portrait Shoppe for professional head-shots. From my office, I heard Lilly telling Michael and Karyl she would be trying out for the musical Annie in a few weeks. After hearing about her upcoming audition, of course Michael had to hear her sing.

Next thing you know I hear this amazing voice coming from the lobby- this little girl could sing! If you only hear her voice, you would never believe she is only nine years old. In fact, her Annie audition is on her upcoming 10^th birthday!

Good Luck Lilly! We’ll be rooting for you here at Portrait Shoppe : )

Portrait Shoppe's Newest Addition

They say, “Good things come to those who wait…” and that’s exactly how our search for a new photographer went here at Portrait Shoppe.

After months of waiting for the perfect candidate to fill Ryan’s outrageously large shoes back in December, we were beyond thrilled when Karyl walked through our doors with her contagious smile and sweet personality! We wanted to get to know a little bit more about the newbie around here so I did an exclusive, spotlight interview with the fabulous Karyl Mullins! Enjoy…

Where are you from originally? I was born and raised near Pikeville, and lived there until I was 18. After living in North Carolina for a few years, I moved to Lexington in 2001 and have been here ever since. I love living here in the horse capital of the world, and the home of the Kentucky Wildcats!

Tell us about your family! I have been blessed with an amazing family. I married my high school sweetheart. We have been together for 17 years, married for 14. We have two beautiful children. Our daughter is 13 years old and loves skating (especially ice skating) and reading, and our 10-year old son loves to play football, soccer, and video games.

Do you have any hobbies (Besides photography of course!)? Amimals!!! I help foster animals whenever possible. I will share my home with them if they are sick or homeless, and enjoy finding them a ‘forever’ home. Our latest addition is a 4 week old kitten that we found abandoned at Beaumont Centre when it was less than 2 weeks old. We have been bottle-feeding her and watching her grow!

What’s your favorite book? Anything by Jonathon Kellerman. I haven’t read all of his books, but Monster is easily my favorite of his books.

What’s your favorite movie? Dirty Dancing has been my favorite movie since the 4th grade. I was Swayze Crazy! I introduced the movie to my daughter a couple of years ago, and we have watched it together at least a dozen times since.

Have you been anywhere out of the country? Does Canada count? Other than Canada, the closest I have come to being in another country is Oktoberfest in Disney World!

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? Germany : ) To visit my brother and his family. My family is planning a vacation there sometime within the next year.

Are you a dog person or more of a cat person? I am definitely a dog person. Dogs are loving, faithful companions. I have two dogs (Lola, a pug and Ellie, a Yorkie-Poo). They greet me at the door each day and are like my shadow whenever I am home.

If you could pick one color to describe you, what would it be? Yellow. I try to be a happy and positive person.

What’s your favorite or most inspirational quote?

"Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing." (Mother Teresa)

What’s your favorite ice cream flavor? Chocolate

Do you go by any nicknames? The normal…mommy, sissy, honey…

What are you most excited about as the newest PS photographer? Other than working with an amazing group, I’m excited because it gives me the opportunity to be uniquely creative with the people I photograph. I am very happy to be part of the Portrait Shoppe family.

Calling All Models! It's time for Star Kids...

I don’t know about all of you readers, but I’m tired of waking up to rainy days! The bluegrass has been full of rain, tornadoes and flooding for weeks now, but there is sunshine in our studios!

How, you may ask…

Well, our STAR KIDS modeling competition is finally here! Being as I just started at Portrait Shoppe in October, I have yet to experience our Star Kids Modeling so I have been anxious for this time of the year to roll around!

We have worked alongside Images Modeling Agency for eight years now raising money for the University of Kentucky Children’s hospital through our Star Kids competition. We are bound and determined to make 2011 our most successful year yet!

The overall winner will receive a full scholarship to Images Modeling Agency and all participants and category winners will receive goody bags and other prizes donated by participants in our community!

Now that Paw-Traits 2011 has come to an end, it’s time to announce the winners! The Paw-Traits Party earlier this week was a success and PetSuites and Portrait Shoppe are proud to announce we donated over $1,250 to the Canine Caner Foundation.

The Paw-Traits contestants enjoyed doggy pizza and dessert from the Barkery and strutted there stuff down the red-carpet while at PetSuites during their party. The winners were revealed and pretty much the rest of the party consisted of doggy play-time!

Hello Again Everyone!

I have learned quickly, through the hustle and bustle of parenthood, it’s easy to get wrapped up in simply maintaining a daily schedule, opposed to living (and truly ENJOYING) each day. It’s important to relax, sit back and laugh along the way.

It may be easier said than done, but it’s something I am personally working on in my own life, and I thought I would share it with you readers. : )

So how will we laugh today?

Olympic Gold Medalist Dives into the Portrait Shoppe!

It was just a normal day at the Portrait Shoppe when a sweet lady walked in while I was typing away at the front desk. She mentioned needing headshots taken to go on brochures for a conference she would be speaking at next week. I scheduled her portrait session and asked for a number we could reach her at, etc., when she just ever so modestly handed me her business card that read, "WORLD OLYMPIAN ASSOCIATION," ...

Hmm... I thought, "there's no way," but, sure enough, she was a real-life Olympian! (actually, a two-time Olympian...)

She told me a little bit about herself and answered all of the questions I had for her at the time- after all, I had never met an Olympian before.. let alone a GOLD MEDALIST. She has an amazing Olympic story! She is such an inspirational woman and we truly feel honored she visited us here at Portrait Shoppe. Thanks Micki : )

Here's a tiny snapshot of Micki King's Olymipic story, courtesy of her personal bio...

Micki King, is the 1972 Springboard Diving Olympic Gold Medalist. King, a retired US Air Force Colonel, served 26 years on active duty. Her second career was Assistant Athletic at the University of Kentucky where she served 14 years.

The gold medal she won in Munich is one of the Olympic Games’ most exciting comeback stories. In the 1968 Olympics at Mexico City, King was leading the competition going into the final three dives. On the second of her remaining dives, a miscalculation caused King to hit the board breaking her left arm. Despite the mishap she gallantly tried her last dive, but dropped from first to fourth. No medal.

During the four long years between the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games, she did double duty with her Air Force job and her intensive training program. She earned 10 national US diving titles on the way to her second Olympics. It was in Munich, where Micki King captured her gold medal doing the same dive she did with a broken arm four years earlier.

We also had the privilege of interviewing Micki exclusively for you blog readers...

Where did you grow up?

I was born in Pontiac, Michigan and lived there until I left for the University of Michigan where I studied Journalism and Physical Education.

Through out your travels, what is your favorite city?

I’ve been around the world several times over and it’s easier to name places I don’t like, than to pick a single city I like “best.” However, a place that remains special to me over time includes Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the first Olympic Games. This inspiring, historic city is a passionate experience for all visitors, but for Olympians, all of whom are truly connected to the deep history this site holds, it is especially touching.

On the other side of the world, I fell in love with Sydney, Australia during the 2000 Olympic Games. Then there is Shanghai, China (wow) and, I’ll never forget visiting the Principality of Monaco where I met Princess Grace and was invited to a “pool” party in the Royal Garden.

Still, all said, Munich, Germany, where I won my Olympic Gold Medal will always be most special in my heart.

Do you still dive and swim today?

I love a dip in the pool on a hot summer day, but I don’t swim serious laps or dive from a board for fun any more. I’ve discovered it’s easier to remember the good ole days than try to re-live them.

What is your favorite book?

I do love to read, but admit reading takes a back seat when I’m running crazy with several projects at once. However, I’ve discovered audio books and now I “read” more than ever! My all time favorite book is “Hunt for Red October.” I’ve read it, listened to it, and seen the movie many times over.

What is your favorite color?

Chartreuse

What are your hobbies?

I play tennis three or four times a week.

What is your favorite Olympic memory?

Each Olympic medal at the Munich Olympics was engraved on the thin ledge with the winner’s name. I quickly checked this out. My Gold medal was engraved “Nicki” King. They spelled my name wrong! I was escorted to the engraver who spoke very little English. So, I slowly explained … my name is “MIC-ki but my medal says “NIC-ki” and could he change it??

He was clearly upset by his mistake. After a long moment, he lifted his eyes to mine and said in broken English, “much easier for you to change name, than to change medal.” And, it reads Nicki King to this day.

What words of advice do you have for others?

I live by the motto “Make it better for those that follow.” This philosophy has guided me for a long time and it applies to everything I do – big or small – ranging all the way from lobbying Congress for women’s sports and Title IX, to pushing a stray shopping cart from the parking lot back to the store. Opportunities are there everyday for every one of us to simply “…make it better …………”

Wells Visits Portrait Shoppe!

Can you believe it’s almost March?!? Wells is turning the corner on SEVEN months old this weekend. Even saying that out loud sounds crazy… time is really flying by! Last week I brought him into Portrait Shoppe for new portraits. He did awesome (mainly because Shelly was playing peek-a-boo with him from behind the camera- he loves that game!)

Being the typical Mom that I am, I had to share the finished product with everyone! And as you can see, he can sit up very well on his own now. (Go Wells!) Oh-yeah, and any day now he should be crawling so things should be getting interesting… enjoy the portraits!

Dust off that camera and come to our Photography Training Class!

Who’s ready to actually learn how to use their camera at home? I know I am! I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of not capturing those special moments at home with my own camera because the pictures don’t turn out how I’d hoped.

Meet Miss Taelor!

Sample month was a HUGE success! We are in the process of creating tons of new samples for our galleries, and we met some awesome kids during their portrait sessions with Shelly!

We will be featuring all of our models in our advertisements, on our website, Facebook and of course some will be featured here on Portrait Shoppe’s blog!

Our first model we would like to present is Taelor! She did such a great job during her shoot, and she is also an aspiring model. With her curls and adorable smile (and a sweet personality to match!) this 12-year-old is well on her way to success.

101 in 1001- Who's With Me?

I’m an avid blog reader. I love finding new and interesting blogs to read whenever I have downtime, even if that equals only ten minutes before I go to bed at night. Usually, I like to read blogs by moms- it’s nice to relate to other women out there!

Aside from Mom blogs, I like to find inspirational blogs as well. It’s so easy to have such a hectic schedule that you forget about everything in the world except for your own little sticky note of things to do. The other day I came across a blog that truly made me take a double-take and I wanted to share it with the rest of you mom’s out there!

What I found was the Day Zero Project. It’s basically a giant to-do list: 101 goals to accomplish in 1001 days. I haven’t started my list of 101 things yet, (keep in mind I’m in the presence of a 6 month old all day- I’m not superwoman or anything lol) but I plan to start this weekend!

Well, I hope you may also be inspired to start writing your list! I also recommend checking out the Day Zero Project Blog!

Baby Food Here We Come!

Now that my son, Wells, is almost six months old we have ventured into the world of baby food! We started him on baby cereal at about five months and he did like it, but I found the cereal to be VERY messy. Baby food is much easier to feed him without getting it all over the place!

So far, he has seemed to like every kind he has tried, but I guess anything with flavor would be exciting to try for the first time. You can’t feed it to him fast enough though- it’s the funniest thing. As soon as he swallows a spoonful he will let a big whine and give you the, “what’s taking so long MOM?” face.

Looking back at his portraits I posted on the blog in November, I can’t believe he has already grown so much in only three months! Now I am starting to understand why parents always say to cherish these moments while he is so tiny and lovable.

Paw-Traits, Paw-traits, PAW-TRAITS!

As we all anxiously wait for the New Year, our furry friends are anxious about something else…

Lexington’s 3^rd annual PAW-TRAITS of course! So here are a few more details about Portrait Shoppe and Pet Suites’ Paw-traits contest for Fido, Sparky, Gizmo and all the other pups out there that just can’t wait any longer!

There are three different judging categories: small, medium and large breed.
Portrait sessions can be anytime from January 1- Feruary 28^th.
The judges will pick two winners from each category along with one overall winner.
A party for the participants will take place at Pet Suites in March and the winners will be announced!
Paw-Traits benefits the National Canine Cancer Foundation.
There are awesome doggy prizes including a wall portrait from Portrait Shoppe, a $250 gift certificate to Pet Suites, goody baskets from the Barkery and much more!

The Story of My Furry Friend Dexter…

Having a five month old baby boy, I often think to myself, “You know, he really needs a friend.” Not another sibling, but a puppy! Every time I get this sporadic notion, my boyfriend reminds me of how we can’t exactly fit a puppy in our tiny apartment.

I just remember being about six years old and my parents surprising us with a puppy on Christmas that year. My brother’s and sister and I had to share him of course, but it still was the best Christmas present I can remember. Dexter was a long- haired Golden Retriever with the playfulness of a child and a truly big heart. He was a people person to say the least.

When I was in college, I distinctly remember receiving a phone call from my Mom that made my heart just sink into my stomach. Dexter had a tumor in his mouth, and he was too old to be put under for surgery. It was growing bigger everyday, but luckily, Dexter felt no pain.

After about six months Dexter passed away from the tumor, but he will always have a special place in my heart- as I’m sure everyone’s first puppy does!

When I started working at Portrait Shoppe I was very excited to hear that our Paw-Traits contest benefits the National Canine Cancer Foundation. Canine Cancer is becoming increasingly common so I’m glad we contribute to such an amazing cause!!

Top Dogs of Paw-Traits 2010!

2010 was an awesome year for our Paw-Traits competition! I just wanted to give all of you readers a glimpse of last year’s competitors! There were two winners for each category (small, medium and large breed) and one overall winner (Kalu, the Great Dane in the bigger picture!) If you have a dog, you don’t want to miss this!

It’s tons of fun and the best part about Paw-Traits is it raises money for the Canine Cancer Foundation.

10 Outstanding Christmas Photography Tips

Christmas is the favorite time of year for so many people, but it is unfortunately one of the least-well photographed holidays. Want to really make this Christmas memorable? Here are some of our very own tips (from the pros at Portrait Shoppe) that will help make your Christmas photos stand out!

1. Make a list...Check it twice!

At this time of year you are busy with so many things (gifts, cards, wrapping, travel plan, etc.) that it's easy to overlook the camera. Make it a point this year to prepare for photo taking: charge your battery before Christmas day, have a fresh memory card (or 2, or 3...), you might even set up your tripod the night before so it's ready to go in the morning!

If you're traveling for Christmas, pack your camera bag and all the accessories the night before (you won't want to have to try and think of all those details in the morning), and please--whatever else you do--remember to bring your camera with you!

2. Add Light

Indoor photos are notoriously dark, so you'll probably have to add some light to get the exposure correct. But don't use your on camera flash - it ruins the "mood" of the photo! Find a way to bounce the flash off the ceiling or the wall, or add light from another source: a window, a bright lamp - anything you can find to brighten the room.

3. White Balanced Christmas

Many Christmas photos are taken inside, under many differently colored artificial lights. White balancing your camera is a must if you're going to have natural colors in your photos (and especially if you are taking Tip #2 seriously).

4. Take Befores and Afters

The best presentation of any Christmas morning is NOT photos of your kids opening every single gift, but rather a "before" and "after" photo of the tree. You could also do a "before" where the kids are holding their stockings, and and "after" with the candy strewn about them on the floor. Think of other creative ways to capture the Before/After dynamic of Christmas day!

5. Gift Opening: Continuous Shooting Mode

Set your camera to continuous shooting mode for gift opening, so that as your kids are tearing into their gifts you can simply press and hold the shutter button. This will help you capture the perfect expression on your child's face as he/she is seeing what Santa brought them. (then please see Tip # 9!)

6. Avoid Clutter...in your photos, that is

The biggest error of most Christmas photos is the busy-ness. There is so much stuff decorating the houses during this season as it is; then you add gifts, wrapping paper, and lots of people, and it quickly become a visual mess! Try your best to lessen the clutter in your photographs:

• Every photograph should have only ONE subject: decide what it's going to be
for each and every shot, then shoot only for that

• Find your focusing point (highlighting your subject) then blur the rest of the photo
by getting in close and using a shallow depth of field

• Fill your frame, cropping out the other stuff in the room that is not your subject

• Set up your camera in a spot where there's not a lot of complicated
scenery in the background

• Especially avoid any light emitting electronic devices!

7. Go Macro

Get close up on the gifts, ornaments, lights, nativity sets, and food. Christmas is full of little treasures, go on a hunt for them and get up close to them for maximum effect.

8. At least one GREAT Group Photo

Every Christmas needs at least one photo of the whole family together. Instead of waiting until right before everyone leaves (and is exhausted from the day!), take the group shot early in the day when everyone's fresh and still excited. And put them all really close together (closer than they want to be), and make use of different levels and heights (have some people sit, kneel, bend, etc.)

9. Edit Like Mad!

When the day of shooting is over, you might have a couple hundred photos from the day...you do not need every one of them! Nobody (not even you) needs to endure having to look at photographs of every single Christmas gift being opened. So really go through your photos carefully and pick only the ones that really capture the joy and spirit of the season, or exclaim the personality of the person. Toss the ones of everybody just sitting around looking dull, the one of your husband you snapped while he was in the middle of a sentence, and ALL the blurry ones! Everybody (and you most of all) will appreciate it!

10. Tis the Season for Sharing

Want to be the hero of the season? After you've distilled your photos down to the best couple dozen (use Tip #9), make that last extra push to get them up on Facebook or another photo sharing site before the day is over. Why not wait? Because there's something really special about Christmas day that makes people feel warm and fuzzy, and the sooner they see photographs the more they appreciate them and the more they remember just how wonderful it really was.

Hopefully you can put these to use this Christmas season and really "WOW" your family with your photograph skills this year!

Spotlight Interview: Kenya and Noah Woods

Kenya Woods brought her son, Noah, into the Portrait Shoppe and had an amazing session with Shelly! He is an adorable little boy so we just had to post their portraits for everyone to see! At only six months when Kenya brought him into the studio, Noah was just a bundle of smiles and full of personality.

I interviewed Kenya with a few questions about Noah and herself…

What new/funny/cute things has Noah learned lately?

Noah is scooting backwards and discovering his shadow... He loves playing with his hand and watching the shadow on the wall. He also enjoys beating up his big brother.... it's funny to watch him go after Joshua with his right and left "jab." Joshua is 9, so it's okay!

What does Noah enjoy doing/playing with?

He has a very loud playskool truck that he loves to play with. It makes a lot of sounds and he "attacks" it every chance he gets. He also has a sing along book that was given to him by one of my friends. It sings nursery rhymes and lights up. He loves that book.

What is your favorite thing about Noah’s personality?

Noah has a very calm dismeanor. He is very observant like his father and doesn't get worked up about anything. I love his calmness. It puts me at ease and makes me a better mother.

What do you think Noah’s favorite color is and why?

Probably yellow or any really bright color. He tends to respond to really loud colors. They excite him.

What has changed since your older son was little concerning raising a baby?

Everything has changed. New technology and baby gadgets..... However, the one thing that has changed the most is ME. I am less uptight about Noah. I guess you learn with the first one and relax a little when the second one comes.

How does Noah compare to Joshua as a baby (are they similar or completely different)?

Noah and Joshua look just alike. They are identical twins, separated by 9 years! But their personalities are very different. Joshua is very demanding like me. Joshua loves attention like me. Noah could care less.... He's always relaxed and laid back. Another thing Joshua and Noah have in common is that neither of them sleep thru the night!!!!!

What is your favorite memory about your shoot at the Portrait Shoppe?

It is a combination of things....

I came to Portrait Shoppe to capture a moment in time. I wanted to have pictures of my son at 6 months old.... However, my experience at Portrait Shoppe left me with a lasting memory of the pricelessness of motherhood and the preciousness of my infant son.

These images will last me a lifetime and I am so thankful for the experience.

Wrapped or Unwrapped? That Sneaky Santa Claus!

I know it’s been a long while since Santa’s left presents for me under the tree on Christmas Eve, but I can still vividly remember the anticipation I felt as a child waiting for Christmas morning! My brothers and sister and I would make our lists and give them to my parents (who, of course, would mail them to the North Pole for us) and pretty much just wait for the big day to come!

Despite having four kids in my family, Santa still never disappointed! One of the best parts about Christmas morning, other than opening the toys, was the first look at the Christmas tree as we ran into the living room once we were all awake. We would take a few moments to stare in awe at all of the bows, ribbons and bright colored Christmas wrapping paper.

Which leads me to my point- Santa wrapped the presents at our house! Growing up, some of my friends had wrapped presents while others had their toys under the tree unwrapped on Christmas morning. I’m not sure how Santa managed to get all of it done in one night- but he always did! So that’s the side I’m on in the Great Christmas Present Debate- wrapped!

Dear Santa...

As many of you may know, Santa visited the Portrait Shoppe the weekend after Thanksgiving to take portraits with as many kids as we could squeeze into our appointment book. All of the children brought their best smiles to their sessions, but two little one’s were even prepared with letters for Santa! Forget the mail! They wanted to bring their letters straight to Mr. Claus himself!

Complete with Santa stationary, these letters were too cute not to blog about! Hunter, the seven-year old, said he wants D.S. games and also said Santa could “surprise me with other stuff,” (Of course!)

Taylor, who is four-years old, even colored Santa a picture to go along with his letter in which he first let Santa know, “I have been good this year, even learned my letters.” Both Hunter and Taylor made sure to inform Santa about the chocolate chip cookies they were leaving under the tree.

Until next time, everyone better be staying on Santa’s “nice,” list out there!

With Christmas right around the corner, we are trying to collect as many toys as possible for underprivileged kids here in Lexington. We need your help! The Portrait Shoppe wants so many toys donated to Toys for Tots they flood our studio’s lobby.

I think sometimes around the holidays we all forget that some people don’t have an extra penny to spend on Christmas presents for their kids. Especially in these rough economic times, who doesn’t want every kid smiling on Christmas morning?

Winterizing A Newborn

Whether we like it or not, the winter weather is almost in full swing. Being a first time mom the phrases, “Make sure you put a hat on that baby,” and, “I bet his little feet are cold without socks,” are nothing new to my ears. Of course I put socks on my baby! He just manages to kick them off after wearing them for ten minutes!

I find it challenging to keep my son bundled up without feeling like I’m making him roast the entire time he is in the car. My son, Wells, always has a little sweaty back when I get him out the car seat. Luckily, it doesn’t seem to bother him much, but I always feel bad for the little guy!

I guess I’ll just add this to the ever-growing list of things I can’t figure out about babies...

Twins Equal Double the Fun at the Portrait Shoppe!

Look at these two cuties! Savannah and Andrew had an absolutely amazing portrait session! The twins loved showing off their favorite Hello Kitty and Spiderman gear while also showing off those sweet smiles.

Don’t they both just have the prettiest blue eyes? The white background really makes their beautiful features shine and their eyes “pop”. Makes you just want to squeeze their cute little cheeks, huh?

Savannah and Andrew have been coming to the Portrait Shoppe since they were babies and it has been so neat to literally watch them grow before our very eyes! Shelly always has fun with these two- their personalities really shine in front of the camera. These two have learned a lot for their older sister Kacie, who knows how to put on a smile. She was Portrait Shoppe’s second Star Kids Modeling Contest winner when she was 5 years old.

Happy Birthday to Me!

I promised pictures from my family’s portrait shoot so here they are! In honor of my birthday today, I felt it would only be appropriate to post portraits of my own little monster, Wells. I am in love with them- Shelly really did an amazing job. I am super excited to show them off to my family and friends over the holidays! (And to all of you readers out there of course!)

Keep in mind, Wells was not a happy camper during the entire session. If I had to sum up his “happy” time during the shoot I would say it was about 10 out of the 45 minutes (I am beginning to realize my baby boy is about as predictable as, well, any other 3 month old baby I guess!) Nevertheless, we still had numerous adorable images to choose from. Enjoy!

To Jump or Not to Jump: That is the Question

Being the new girl around here, I am learning a little more about Shelly, Ryan and Michael every day. What have I learned most recently?

THE GIRLS HAVE MORE GUTS THAN THE GUYS!

I discovered this interesting fact during a conversation with Ryan today in the studio. He informed me that although some people may have the desire to bungee jump, he's not really the thrill-seeking type. Knowing Shelly had already said she would, "maybe" make the jump, I decided we had to get Michael involved as well. Much to my surprise, well not exactly (haha) , Michael pretty much said there is no way in this world you get get him to jump from that high up.

Then Ryan asked me what I would do and automatically my first response was, "You know, I'm not really sure," then I proceeded to tell him, "I did one of those mini-bungee jumps at Kings Island once. It wasn't so bad really!" Then, just like I always seem to do, I talked myself into something as I answered him again, "Yep! I would go!"

So what did we learn from all this? Well, apparently the girls are the one's that wear the pants around the Portrait Shoppe. If there is ever a matter in which bravery/guts are needed, looks like I'll be running for Shelly!

May I Introduce Myself....

Hello readers! I’m the new blogger in town here at the Portrait Shoppe. I have bit the bullet and finally decided to introduce myself. Why read a blog by someone you know nothing about?

My name is Kallie Milburn and I’m originally from Shelbyville, KY, often referred to as the halfway point between Louisville and Lexington. Usually when I tell people I am from Shelbyville their response is, “I think I’ve been there. Isn’t that where Colonel Sander’s restaurant is?” So to answer those of you that may be thinking that exact same thing- yes! Lol, but technically the restaurant was named after his wife, Claudia.

Either way, I left the infamous Shelbyville when I began school at the University of Kentucky (Go Cats!) in 2005. I graduated from UK last year with a B.S. in public relations and a minor in business.

Looking back at the year and a half that has passed since I graduated college, it feels like a tornado picked me up and dropped me into this wonderful life that I never could’ve imagined. On July 25 of this year I held my precious baby boy for the first time. We named him Wells Patrick and I have never felt so much love for another person in my 24 years of life.

If you’re reading this and have been to the Portrait Shoppe to have your child's portraits taken, I’m assuming you are a parent too! So it goes without saying I have learned more the past three months about changing, feeding, bathing and sleep deprivation than I could have ever anticipated.

After finally feeling like I could put myself together enough to leave the house after having the baby, I decided I would venture into the real world. I was bound and determined to find a job in which I could put my hard-earned degree to good use! That is how I ended up here at the Portrait Shoppe as the new Marketing Director.

I promise from here on out to fill you in on the latest and greatest happenings at the Portrait Shoppe and let you see for yourself the amazing photography that goes on at this place. Along the way, I am excited to share my adventures as a new mom and hopefully give you a good laugh every now and then.

Oooooo C-A-T-S Cats, Cats, Cats!

What cats am I referring to? The Wildcats of course! Lexington’s most beloved college team is wrapping up their football season next month. Soon enough, University of Kentucky fans will be turning their attention to the school’s uber-famous basketball team, and heading to RUPP Arena to once again cheer on the cats, cats, cats!

The football and basketball players may be the reason fans fill the seats at UK games, but the real stars are only found in the stands. No one can help but notice the cute, little fans all decked out in their UK gear. From tiny cheerleader uniforms and jerseys, to pom-poms and UK stickers- the kids always have the best blue and white outfits!

Check out the portraits of Jasper taken here at the Portrait Shoppe. He is the definition of a true UK fan! Not to mention he is undeniably adorable. Look at that miniature UK car!

Fur babies (a.k.a pets), are also known to look pretty cute in their UK outfits. Looks like even dogs are crazy about the CATS! The dogs pictured above visited the Portrait Shoppe and their owners left with some awesome portraits. After all, pets can be more challenging than kids when attempting quality portraits at home.

Fall into the Portrait Shoppe this Season

Right around this time of year, after the sunny pool parties and cookouts of summer have ended but just before the snowy days of winter, we get to appreciate fall and all the, “in-between” season entails.

As a little girl, I have the clearest memory of my Dad raking up piles and piles of leaves for us kids to play in. While we were working up an appetite outside, I would glance through the kitchen window and see my Mom inside making everything from pumpkin pies to homemade vegetable soup for us to eat. Just thinking about my own precious memories of fall puts a big smile on my face.

I can only wish to create the same priceless memories for my newborn son and family one day. From trick or treating to visiting pumpkin patches- it’s the overall spirit of this time of year that makes fall so unique.

At the Portrait Shoppe, seasonal portraits are used to capture the essence of children at a particular time of year. Don’t forget to bring your cute little ones in and capture those fall memories so they can truly last a lifetime. Happy fall!

Ameera has stylish hair and clothes as well as a "stylish" mom too!

Hello All!

We recently had a great visit from Ameera and her hair styling mother, Yasmeen. Ameera had a great experience and we wanted to share the great images that came from her photo session! With the fun Ryan had taking the portraits of Ameera we had to know a few things about Ameera. So, we asked Yasmeen a few questions about her daughter and herself...

1.) Yasmeen, what do you love about Ameera? "Her bubbly personality and how she is always cracking jokes! She's a fun and friendly girl."

2.) What was your most favorite memory about watching Ameera's photo session here at The Portrait Shoppe? "First, I loved the interaction she had with your photographer Ryan. I saw a completely different side of Ameera, she just lite up in front of the camera..." pausing, Yasmeen finished "... that's when I realized she is growing up!"

3.) Where do you work? "Trademark Saloon in Lexington"

4.) Did you do Ameera's hair for the photo shoot? "Yes"

5.) How long did it take for you to style Ameera's hair? "It took about 1 hour."

6.) What is the strangest hair cut style someone has asked you to do? "I was just asked a few days ago to do a 2010 Mullet! However, I was unsure what a "2010" Mullet was so I told them I was not able to do that!"
4a.) - Side Note: While Portrait Shoppe owner, Michael Garrison, was speaking with Yasmeen, he let her know he had a mullet until the age of 29. He went on to let her know it was acceptable/justifiable to have his mullet at 29 as many soccer players wore Mullets back in the late '80s early '90s. Michael then found out that Yasmeen's favorite soccer teams are Brazil's men and women national teams!

Hello again! We wanted to spotlight another great Portrait Shoppe employee; Mr. Sir Ryan Paige. Ryan has worked here since the beginning of 2008 and has participated greatly to The Shoppe! Ryan could tell you a million funny or interesting stories between his 4 children and his masters education in theology. But instead of a story, we asked him for a few good answers to our questions... So let the learning of Mr. Sir Ryan Paige of Lexington begin!

1. Were you named after anyone? "No."

2. Where were you born? "Mineola, NY (Long Island)."

3. Do you have children? "Yes, four of them: Jesse (girl) 5.5, Caleb (boy) 4, Leah (girl) 2.5, Micah (boy) 11mo. – as of September, 2010."

4. Do you use sarcasm? "Never in all my life!"

5. Do you still have your tonsils? "Yes."

6. Would you bungee jump? "No way!"

7. What is your favorite cereal? "Ooo…that’s a tough one…Basic 4 is really good. But I do have a weak spot for the sugary stuff my kids like."

Star Kids Winners!

The Star Kids Modeling Contest to benefit the University of Kentucky Children's Hospital has been in full swing for the past three months. This was the 7th annual Star Kids Modeling Contest and we are so pleased to announce that, with the help and support of all our wonderful participants and sponsors, we were able to donate three times what we donated the year previous. We had so many adorable, cute, beautiful and handsome entrants! We here at the Portrait Shoppe are so excited for all our category winners and are thankful to the great people at Images Modeling Agency for judging the images for the 7th year. Back to school...for parents!

It's back to school time...for the parents! Here at the Portrait Shoppe we are very excited about our first ever Photography Class!

On September 18 our photographers will be helping you hone your skills in photography, giving you tips and tricks to make your home photography look more professional. The seminar will be here at our studio in Fayette Plaza from 11-12:30, or whenever lunch is finished (yep, we are providing lunch!) Due to the size of our studio, we have to limit the class enrollment to 10, so RSVP as soon as possible by sending us an email, writing a note on our Facebook wall, or sending us a note through our website.

I remember, as a kid, running around in a party dress, wearing my mom's high heels and a pillow case for a veil, pretending I was "going to the chapel and gonna get married." I would turn the living room upside down, draping sheets from the couch to the chair to the coffee table, creating my own personal castle. I would play pretend for hours!

Now that I have children of my own I watch them and smile as they run around in their dress up clothes pretending to be firemen or cowboys or scary monsters. They run around our house whooping and hollering, laughing all the while. The sweet innocence of children playing is such a wonderful thing. Sometimes I get in on the act and pretend with them, but usually they make me the bad guy...go figure!

Is it your child's dream to be a cowboy or a mermaid or a fairy princess? We would love to help your child realize that dream. Preparing to be Shot

If you read our blog regularly you may be wondering who that Amanda chick is and why is she writing on Portrait Shoppe's blog. I am the self-named newbie here. I started working for Portrait Shoppe about a month ago and having been easing into all the wonderful aspects of marketing. Being new to Portrait Shoppe and having never had portraits done here (gasp!) I thought I should find out what all the buzz was about.

I purposefully never sat in on any of the portrait sessions since starting so that when I brought in my family I would be able to give you a unique "mom" perspective. So, I checked my calendar carefully. For me, a lot of preparing goes into having pictures done. I just want to make sure everything is perfect. I have to make sure everyone is up on their haircuts, everyone has matching outfits and that the time is such that neither one of my kids will be cranky.  It can be a challenge for me! I hope I am not the only one that stresses out completely over things like this. (If I am, just let me think that I'm not.)

Thankfully only my oldest needed a haircut, but we all needed white shirts. (I had my heart set on doing a classic portrait with white tops and jeans.) I determined the best way to get everyone what we needed was to make a trip to the mall, a dreadful thought with two young boys. Just the thought of getting there was a little daunting! I am in the first trimester with baby #3 and in the throws of all the "ickiness" that comes with it.  I was afraid it would take an act of God for me to get my kids and myself ready to go. To my great surprise and pleasure, once we were there we did really good. My kids respond well to bribery, and a lunch at the food court and playtime in the mall playground goes a LONG way to get their cooperation with shopping. Mission accomplished!

Portrait Shoppe makes it really easy to do your portrait session with your kids in mind.   Naps? No problem! We were able to time the portrait session with my youngest son's nap in mind.  We came in to be warmly greeted by Shelly, one of our photographers. My kids were shy, but excited. Their excitement grew when they saw the colorful changing room with large murals painted on the walls and a chalkboard welcoming them by name. We quickly changed in to our white tops and headed for the studio.

Shelly was great at working with the boys. My boys are 2 1/2 and 5 and, as boys will be, were very interested in all the neat things to look at in the room. Shelly easily got them where they needed to be and pulled wonderful, real smiles from them. I was tired just watching her! She remained upbeat and excited throughout the shoot, making my kids feel comfortable and at ease. I have been to other studios where the photographer wasn't as patient and my kids were ready to bolt! This was so much easier. My kids didn't fuss; they were too busy playing with Shelly! At the end of the shoot their hard work was rewarded with treats and silly bands. Life doesn't get any better in their minds. The end result is a great experience for mom, dad, and kids and some beautiful portraits to add to our wall.   Check out a couple of our pictures below.

Children can be quirky. I remember taking my oldest son to have his one year portraits done and using a baseball mit and ball as props. He was so excited about that ball that he would raise and lower his hand repeatedly, pretending to throw the ball, and bouncing in place. All the pictures with that baseball are in motion (or of him trying to eat the ball)! Similarly, with my youngest, we had "naked baby" pictures done when he was about four months old. He would not leave the sheet covering his lower half in place for anything. It took five minutes to get him to leave it in place. I will forever remember those portrait sessions because my children's silliness was captured in photographs.

Last week we had a cute baby girl come into our studio who was photographed by Ryan. Teagun is a 9 month old little sweetie. In almost all of her shots she would roll her tongue and stick it out of her mouth, just slightly. It was her "signature" look and was absolutely adorable! Check out a few of her images...

Does your child have a quirk or a signature move they do regularly? So many times we want for our kids to have that "perfect" look for portraits, but also capturing those fun moments when they are being silly is a great memory maker. You will be sure to look back on those pictures and smile, remembering those special moments.

Angels When They Sleep...

I don't know about you, but by the time dinner rolls around I sometimes count down the hours, minutes and seconds to when I can send my kids to bed. Sometimes I'm exhausted, worn out, and have just plain had enough. I've even been known to send my two boys to bed early, just to save the little bit of sanity I like to think I have. (Shh...don't tell anyone!)

The story changes once it is bedtime and they are ready to settle down and snuggle and read a bedtime story. My heart warms holding them close and sharing that special time with them. Then when they are all cozy and asleep in their beds, I swear they are just the cutest little angles all cuddled up in the beds, sucking their thumbs and clinging to their stuffed animals. I could never imagine these sweet little things ever being anything but perfect. Certainly these are not the same kids that make my house look like an F4 tornado has whipped through it! You, like me, have probably snuck in on your kids sleeping soundly in their beds and snapped a few pictures to remind yourself later that they really were little sleeping angels.

This is the idea behind our Sleepytime Portraits. We are capturing that time where your kids are (usually) most quiet, most subdued, and when you spend that quality time together as a family, reading a story, talking, and maybe saying a bedtime prayer; the time of day where they don't worry if someone sees them hug you and give you a kiss goodnight.

Sleepytime Portraits are shot with your kids in their PJ's and can be taken with siblings and parents. Families have been photographed reading with their child, snuggling, and with children holding those cherished stuffed animals they won't go to bed without. I relish the time when my kids are sitting with me and sharing that special time of day, as I'm sure you do. While we can't live in those moments of twilight with our little cuddle bugs, you can be certain that we can help you in capturing the essence of that sweet time when the day winds down and you aren't so rushed.

Where Are They Now? - Star Kids 2009 Winner Gianna

Every year we have dozens and dozens of beautiful and handsome entrants to the Star Kids Modeling Contest. Thankfully for us, Images Model and Talent Agency takes on themselves the hard job of selecting the winners. The overall winner of the Star Kids contest is then offered a full scholarship to Images children's classes to get some professional modeling and acting experience. Some of the winners from years past have gone on to pursue further performance venues. We caught up Alena, mom to 2009 winner Gianna, and she gave us a wonderful update on how her little winner was doing. So, here's what Gianna has been up to and how winner the Star Kids Contest affected some of those decisions!

The Star Kids Modeling Competition was a wonderful experience for Gianna. Of course, her favorite part of the entire experience was the photo shoot in the Portrait Shoppe Studio. From the dressing room, the costumes, and the personal attention provided by the staff, Gianna felt like a star even before being selected as the winner. The pictures turned out so beautifully, we had a hard time choosing a favorite to enter in the contest!

When we entered the Star Kids contest, our main priority was to great some great photographs capturing this magical youthful time in our child's life. However, winning the contest greatly improved Gianna's confidence. She went on to win Little Miss Madison County and represent the county at the state fair pageant. She also really enjoyed the classes at Images, especially memorizing scripts and practicing on the runway. Since completing the course at Images, Gianna has participated in several local fashion shows including pageant store Jack N Jill, and is also featured in the current ad campaign for Posh Tots Boutique in Richmond.

Whatever Gianna does, she likes to do it with an abundance of style and fanfare. Gianna is currently training with the Level 3 team at Excel gymnastics in Richmond, where her coach often refers to her as Little Miss America. She also just completed her 4th recital with Bluegrass Dance Center, where she studies tap, ballet, creative dance, and hip-hop. Next week, Gianna will graduate from Kindergarten and looks forward to a summer vacation filled with swimming, reading, play and (probably) mischief. While acting and modeling were never our original plan, Gianna will also attend theater camp to decide if she would like to further pursue acting.

Okay, so the dance season is ending for most of you, but for us it's just getting interesting! We recently photographed many of the girls enrolled in Artistry in Motion, formerly known as Traci Stone's Dance Connection. Check them out on the web and also their Facebook fan page. Some of the girls came to the Portrait Shoppe to have their portraits made, but we also had the privilege of going to their dress rehearsal and photographing the others in full garb. Welcome Back Ryan!

Hey everybody, this is Ryan - one of the photographers of the Portrait Shoppe. You may recognize me from such films as the "Preparing for the Shoot" video and its sequel, "Preparing for the Image Selection." ;-) (You can watch those both by clicking here

I wanted to give you all an update on something that happened to me recently. About 3 weeks ago I started to feel a little dizzy for no apparent reason. Well, within 24 hours I couldn't even stand up! I was also horribly nauseous - every time I moved I had to throw up. My wife called some amazing friends from our church who came and watched our kids, and she drove me to the ER...I couldn't even tell when the car was moving or stopped. I was immediately seen by the Emergency Room staff at Central Baptist Hospital.

We had no idea what was wrong - it could have been anything from virus to stroke to brain tumor. I had a very extensive MRI & MRA and that ruled out all of the scary stuff. Michael, one of the owners of the Portrait Shoppe, and his daughter Krista came to visit me in the hospital along with a few other friends from our church. I was sent home at about 1 am with a diagnosis of "Dizziness," a follow up appointment with an ENT, and some medicine to help me cope with the dizziness and nausea. (My brothers gave me the alternative diagnosis of "too much heavy partying" - thanks guys!)

For 3 or 4 days all I could do was lie in bed - any movement made me feel terrible. The ENT helped to rule out further neurological problems and ear stones (like kidney stones or gall stones, but in your inner ear), and they also gave me a diagnosis of "Dizziness." They said it was likely that I got a bad inner ear infection which caused the severe vertigo and that it would take some time for all the inflammation to go down.

Sure enough, it took more than 2 weeks before I felt normal again. It was a slow road to recovery, but I'm finally back! I am so grateful for all the people who gave us some help, not least of all Shelly for covering all of my time missed at the Portrait Shoppe. I learned that have a lot of good friends who really care about me and my family, and I am so very thankful! I'm still taking it slowly, but it's good to be vertical again!

The NEW Star Kids!

Portrait Shoppe is proud to produce STAR KIDS: Lexington's Annual Children's Modeling Competition.

For 7 years the Portrait Shoppe has been running the Star Kids Modeling Competition, an informal portrait competition that benefits UK Children's Hospital. It is judged by the wonderfully talented people at Images Model Agency. It has always been a success, and this year is going to be no different! And for the first time in7 years, we've made some positive changes to the contest! Here's what you need to know about getting your child into Star Kids.
When is Star Kids? Star Kids begins May 1st and run through most of the summer. Your portrait session needs to be done within this time period. *Suggestion: get it done early, because the end of July is crazy busy with people trying to cram it in!*

What are the age restriction? Anybody ages 0-12 is eligible to enter (that's your age as of May 1st, the beginning of the contest).

How is Star Kids judged? Star Kids is broken down into Age, Gender, and Style Categories, so there are lots of opportunities for your child to win! The age categories are: 0-11 months, 12-23 months, 2-3 years, 4-5 years, 6-7 years, 8-10 years, 11-12 years. Within each age category there are 2 boy winners and 2 girl winners: one Reality winner, and one Imagination winner. There are also two overall winners: one from 0-3 years, one from 4-12 years. All the judging is done by Images Model and Talent Agency - we (the photographers) get too attached to your children to make fair, objective judgments!)

How do I enter? All entries will be chosen from photographs taken at the Portrait Shoppe during the eligible months. All you have to do is make an appointment at the Portrait Shoppe. You may call the studio (859.277.6671) or you can make an appointment online (click here). But don't wait too long to make your appointment, or you might not be able to get a spot!

Does it cost anything to enter? The entrance fee to the Star Kids Modeling Competition is $99. This covers your session fee, your registration for Star Kids, the donation for UK Children's Hospital, and $50 towards whatever order you place.

What about scenes and outfits? For Star Kids, there are NO RESTRICTIONS! You can wear anything and use any of our scenes – but we have to have individual images, group shots won’t work. You may submit multiple children per family and/or a child into more than one category, but there will be an individual entrance fee for each.

How do you choose which image to use? We don’t – YOU do. We’ll help you of course, and give you suggestions, but the final decision is yours as to which image you want to submit. (See our post about How To Win A Modeling Competition for some suggestions on this.)

What does my child get if he/she wins? Every participant, winner or not, will get a 4×6 of the image they choose and a goodie bag full of prizes, coupons, and discounts at all participating businesses in Lexington. Typically those gift bags are worth somewhere in the vicinity of $100. The category winners will get more substantial prizes: gift certificates, dinners, etc. And the overall winners? Free registration and classes at Images Modeling Agency!

Why do Star Kids at all? Before it is anything else, Star Kids is a benefit for the UK Children's Hospital. The Star Kids Modeling Contest has been donating to them for 7 years, and has raised thousands of dollars! This year we're making an extra effort: we are doubling our donation from all previous years! In addition to that we are also donating a percent of the total sales from the contest to the UK Children's Hospital. So the 2010 donation is expected to be significantly larger than any we've made yet. But also (and not unimportantly), Star Kids is FUN! It's fun for you, for your child, for us...it's just a good time all around. So come and be part of the fun! We look forward to seeing your Star Kid and helping them to shine!

How To Win A Modeling Contest

Does your child have what it takes to win Lexington's Star Kids Modeling Contest?

I'll bet he or she does! There isn't a single child we've ever photographed that has not been beautiful and worthy of being called so. Winning a modeling contest isn't so much about perfect looks and flawless skin as it is about showing off and capitalizing on your child's particular beauty. Here are a few tips on preparing for, picking out, and producing a photography session that will send your child's image right to the top of the list!

1. Style Matters

There are two distinct styles for Star Kids Modeling Contest: Reality and Imagination. It matters not only because they are judged separately, but because you want to choose the style that best suits your child's look and personality. Is your son a real dreamer who likes to play pretend and perform for you at home? Then the Imagination style will allow us to capture him in his best moments. Is your daughter down to earth with a quiet smile and a tendency to talk rather than play? Then the Reality style will present her in a much more suitable way. When deciding think less about what you want to see, and more about what's going to best showcase your child.

2. Planning Ahead Makes A BIG Difference

This might be common sense, but don't go into your portrait session completely unprepared. You'll want to make sure that your child's outfit fits the background/set you doing. Talk with the photographer (call the studio and ask who your photographer is going to be) and discuss the session with them - that helps a LOT! Get your son or daughter plenty of rest the night before his/her session (trust me, this one is huge!). For all these details, check out our video learning center (choose the "preparing for the shoot" video).

3. Act the Part...

Regardless of which style you choose, it's important that your child is really fitting that style to make it really work. This is beyond the personality and outfit we've already mentioned, this is about having your child pose and act appropriate to the scene. For Reality images, this means more traditional poses, less big goofy smiles and more soft natural faces, and strong eye contact with the camera. For Imagination images acting the part is extra important - let your child's imagination really run wild! If she's a mermaid, do your best to encourage her to imagine herself as one and discover the ocean world; if he's a cowboy, we're looking for rugged poses and snarls. The very best thing you can do is to really let the photographer set the pace of the session and to encourage your child in the same way.

4. ...but Be Natural

As important as it is to "act the part," what you must be wary of is the tendency to be fake. One of the most destructive thing a parent can do for a child's portrait session is to tell them, "now make sure you smile really big!" Kids stick out there chins and give us a great big "CHEEEEEEESE!" ... which is cute, but it's not going to win a modeling contest. Likewise, if your child is being forced to behave a certain way he or she is more likely to freeze up and not look right at all. You have to let kids be themselves; if they are goofy let them be so, if they are shy that's okay - the important thing is to let them be them. All kids are beautiful, but not all in the same way - you want to let your child's individuality really come through in the portraits.

5. Show Off Your Child's Best Features

Like we just said, it's very important to showcase your child for who he/she naturally is. To bring out their natural beauty, we want to highlight their best features. Not every 18 month old is doe-eyed; if yours is, then we'll make sure we spotlight some close ups, but if not then pick whatever distinguishing features your child does have and highlight those instead. This is where picking the right pose comes in to play: the photographer will photograph your child in a number of different poses, from a number of different angles; it's ultimately your job to pick the pose that gets submitted to the contest. You'll want to pick the one that really spotlights your child's best features.

6. Uniqueness vs. Perfection

As far as picking a pose goes, your photographer will help you and give you suggestions as to which he/she thinks is the best pose, and often that's enough. But you'll have to make a judgment between a more candid, personality filled image and a more posed, traditional looking image. I hate to tell you this, but there is no "right" answer, it's a judgment call - and the winning portraits will often have both. Typically, however, you need to have the perfection in place before you have the uniqueness. What I mean is, you may see a shot that "is just so your child!" but it may not be a great pose, or may show his/her face in a less than ideally flattering way. Well, as much as you love that shot, don't submit it to the contest - buy it for yourself at home. Look for the poses that are primarily good poses/looks, and secondarily have a unique flair about them.

Another word about uniqueness: many times the modeling contest will result in a number of people in the same few poses...because they work. A pose that isn't often seen, though, will stand out in a judges mind. Anything you can do to have the judges remember your child or look at his/her image for a few extra seconds is an advantage. So, if there is a pose that you haven't seen much before and it's got the markings of perfection (mentioned above), then it might be a good one to choose.

7. For Goodness Sake--Have Fun!

This may seem trivial (after all, it's a competition, right? We want to WIN!), but you have got to have a good time! There's nothing good that comes from a portrait session with a miserable child. So if they're not having fun it's essentially a bust. Did you watch that video on our learning center yet? No? Okay, watch it now by clicking here. One of the most important points is to relax and tell your child that this is a fun thing, NOT a big serious deal...because it's not. Star Kids is a casual, relaxed event that is intended to raise money for UK Children's Hospital - it's not pageantry. Though there are some substantial prizes, it's more about fun. So, relax and have fun, and let your child have the time of their life doing it!

How we accomplish some of the gorgeous images at the Portrait Shoppe

Over the years we have had thousands of comments and compliments about our images, particularly about our Imagination Style. Imagination is one of the truly unique areas of the Portrait Shoppe; it is our niche here in Lexington, something that nobody else does quite the same, and in many ways it has become a defining style for the Portrait Shoppe. But creating a beautiful imagination image isn't just about buying some fun whimsical props and simply posing the child within that scene. We really play with the children, let them explore their new environment, and let their own imaginations dictate the events and poses that we achieve. A child's imagination is 1,000 times more powerful than we adults remember, and that's what we have to tap into to really produce stunning, beautiful images...and sometimes it takes a little of our own imagination too.

Isn't she beautiful?!?! Well, this little angel was only three months old. She had a wonderful session with us in our garden baby bassinet (which is perfect for that age). She was happy and smiling the whole time...until we changed her into the dress. As is always the case with kids, when they pull the plug on a session you are pretty much finished - there's just not much you can do with a crying child who doesn't want to have his/her photograph taken. Here's where the innovation of the photographer kicks in.

Little Alexandra Grace (LOVE the name!) was miserable after we brought her back into the studio. The only place she wasn't crying was in mom's arms. Poor thing, she was tired! Babies have an especially short window of awake time in which you can get their photographs. But rather than throwing in the towel (which is so easy to do), Shelly, the photographer, got creative.

She moved the bassinet and sat mom down on the backdrop. Then she put a green blanket over her arms and lap and set the now sleeping Alexandra down in her arms again. Then she decorated mom with flowers and ivy so that she became the new set! Check out this work in progress:

(That's Ashley putting on the finishing touches). So, Shelly could have simply called the session when Alexandra started to lose it and walked away the great images she got from the first half. But she didn't, and it was worth it! Mom was thrilled, Alexandra was happy to finally be asleep, and the images in the dress are amazing!

Can't tell, can you? That's the whole idea. So next time you're faced with a screaming child or a moment that looks like its over, put a little creative thinking to use and see how you work with the issues instead of having them work against you. And who knows what beautiful material you might produce!

Easter Lamb Portraits 2010

We had a fabulous Easter this year! All of your children were beautiful and so much fun! and even though we can't show you everything we photographed this season, we did want to show you a few highlights from our Lamb Portraits this past year!

We had a great time with this baby lamb - it was only a day old when we first got it! (The poor thing kept falling asleep, it was so new!) But the kids were AMAZING! We were so proud of everybody this year - you all were wonderful!

What a great weekend!

This past weekend we had a baby lamb as our guest - he was born on Wednesday, and we began shooting portraits on Thursday! Wow! What a special opportunity to be holding and photographing a newborn animal. He slept A LOT...babies usually do. But he was beautiful, and the kids loved him! We were completely booked with lamb portraits on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and this week has been full with selection and purchase appointments! Whew! We can't wait to show you some of the images, so make sure you check back here soon - the next post will be lamb portraits from 2010!

They are so CUTE!!! They're just babies, only a few months old. They just came today, and they'll be here for another 3 weeks! Spotlight: Caleb the Hatchling

Here's an adorable scene we just did for a 4 month old boy for Easter!

How cute is he?!?! His name is Caleb - and he was a great subject! His mom brought in the feathers and the giant egg, it was the perfect touch!

We've only used the birds nest once before, and we were thrilled to have the chance to do it again! We really loved the turnout!

4 quick tricks for getting great Paw-traits

We're right in the middle of our Paw-traits Modeling Contest. For those of you who don't know much about it, it's Lexington's 2nd Annual Dog Modeling Contest, all to raise funds for the National Canine Cancer Foundation. It is hosted by ourselves and PetSuites of Lexington and it runs all the way through March 31st! To learn more about it Watch This Video, Read This, and call us at 859.277.6671.

Well, as we've been photographing all these dogs, we've noticed a few things that may help when you want to snap a great photo of your own furry friend.

1. Save the play for after the photos.

Your dog likes you...I mean, really likes you! And he wants nothing more than to be in your lap. And if you engage this highly loving creature in some physical play before you try and get pictures chances are you wont get him to stay still long enough to snap the photo. So muster up your own self-control and save the rough housing until after your photo session is done.

2. Keep treats handy.

Dogs respond incredibly well to extrinsic motivation (a.k.a. bribery). So keep a handful of treats available to bribe your dog with - chances are she'll stay still if she knows she's getting something for it. The thing you have to remember then is, make sure you actually reward your dog for her good behavior! If you don't she won't have any reason to keep sitting. WARNING! If you keep treats in your pocket so your dog won't see them, just make sure she doesn't smell them out, or you're done for! And whatever you do, DO NOT bring out her favorite ball or toy!!! (See trick #1)

3. Play with camera angles.

Dogs don't photograph the same way as people; they look great from some really funny angles and terrible from others. Use a variety of angles and focal lengths when photographing your furry friend and see what works and what doesn't. Keep in mind that the most classic dog images from the art world are often with the dog looking off to one side.

4. Pay extra special attention to the background!

It's ALWAYS crucial to watch your backgrounds in portrait photography, but with dogs you should take extra care because their fur will blend in to the background if it's similar in color. Try and choose a background with vibrant color that isn't found in the dogs fur, or against the opposite light/dark background from your dog's fur (e.g. if your dog is black, try a white or light colored background - NOT black!)

Above all else, have FUN! And make sure your dog has fun too! After all - they're worth it! Enjoy your adventures!

Spotlight: Savannah and her Kitty Megan!

This was a real treat for us! A couple of years ago Savannah was a category winner in our Star Kids Modeling Contest. We hadn't seen her since then, but she just recently came back in! She's 8 now and has grown into a wonderful girl! AND...Savannah brought a friend with her to be photographed: her new kitten Megan!

Isn't she adorable?!? We were so thrilled to be able to photograph a cute girl and her new best friend. Check out a few of these great images of them together!

As you can see, Ashley and Shelly couldn't keep their hands off this cute little furball. They are true cat ladies: between them they've had more than 50 cats in their lifetimes!

Spotlight: Hannah and Sam!

Aren't they cute?!?! Hannah and Sam first came through our doors at Christmas time. Sam brought one of his dad's old cars to play with and Hannah brought her kitty and tea set - Shelly had a blast photographing them! (If you'd like to see some of those images, check out our Facebook page - click on the Unique Kids Photo Album.) I guess they had a good time too, because not too long ago 3-year-old Hannah asked to come back. She said to her mom, "can we go back to the place where the lady put my kitty on her head?" (Shelly will often do crazy things to get the kids to smile!) So...they came back...and it was wild! One of our most energetic, upbeat sessions! Just take a look at a small sample of the fun!

We are thrilled that these two came in to help us with Sample Month - we enjoy having them here so much! We look forward to seeing more of them in the future! Keep your eyes peeled for more images of Hannah and Sam as Sample Month draws to a close.

Crazy Video of Ashley

Here's something fun - remember the snow we had two weeks ago? Well, Ashley (our newest photographer) was outside trying to sweep off some of the snow from the stoop of the Portrait Shoppe and...well, she can get a little crazy sometimes. So while she was sweeping--you know what, you'd better just watch the video.

You know what the funniest part is? She didn't know that we were recording video! She just thought it was a couple of still shots! So, that's just Ashley being herself. We love our staff!

If you have never read it before, please take a minute and read this awesome story! Eight-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York's Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial Sept. 21, 1897. The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church has since become history's most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies, and other editorials, and on posters and stamps.

'Twas the Week before Santa

‘Twas the week before Santa and all through the Shoppe
The photographers busied themselves setting up...

The costumes were hung in the studio with care,
In hopes that the children would like them to wear;

The backgrounds were ready, the lights metered right,
The props were all set and packed in rather tight.

And Shelly and Ashley arranged the décor
While Ryan called clients, and Michael swept the floor.

When all of a sudden we heard the door, “Jing!”
We looked and we saw the most wonderful thing,

A charming old man in gold colored robe
With a cloak and some slippers topping off his wardrobe.

With a head full of hair that was billowing white
And a beard set to match he was really a sight.

The glasses that sat on his nose were just fine
And upon his head was a wreath made of pine.

And we turned and cried, “Santa! We’re so glad you’re here!
We haven’t seen you since this time last year!”

And he laughed and he stretched out his arms open wide
And he gave us a hug, pulled us in to his side,

And he said, “Oh, my dears, I’m so glad I’ve arrived,
For being with you makes me feel so alive;

But the kids—oh the kids! Now they’re really the reason
That I come to the Portrait Shoppe each Christmas Season;

I love how they smile, how they laugh, how they play,
And the innocent fun that they have every day!

There’s no greater joy that I keep for my part
Than a young girl or boy who feels loved in their heart.

So bring on the children! I can’t wait to see
Who comes here this year to sit on my knee!”

Then laughing he went in the back to prepare
For the kids who’ll be coming to visit him there.

Now he’ll be here two weekends, but only those two
(for as Christmas approaches he’s got LOTS to do):

Christmas is for Love

Christmas is for love. It is for joy, for giving and sharing, for laughter, for reuniting with family and friends, for tinsel and brightly decorated packages. But mostly, Christmas is for love. I had not believed this until a small elf-like student with wide-eyed innocent eyes and soft rosy cheeks gave me a wondrous gift one Christmas.

Mark was an 11 year old orphan who lived with his aunt, a bitter middle aged woman greatly annoyed with the burden of caring for her dead sister's son. She never failed to remind young Mark, if it hadn't been for her generosity, he would be a vagrant, homeless waif. Still, with all the scolding and chilliness at home, he was a sweet and gentle child.

I had not noticed Mark particularly until he began staying after class each day (at the risk of arousing his aunt's anger, I later found) to help me straighten up the room. We did this quietly and comfortably, not speaking much, but enjoying the solitude of that hour of the day. When we did talk, Mark spoke mostly of his mother. Though he was quite small when she died, he remembered a kind, gentle, loving woman, who always spent much time with him.

As Christmas drew near however, Mark failed to stay after school each day. I looked forward to his coming, and when the days passed and he continued to scamper hurriedly from the room after class, I stopped him one afternoon and asked why he no longer helped me in the room. I told him how I had missed him, and his large gray eyes lit up eagerly as he replied, "Did you really miss me?"

I explained how he had been my best helper. "I was making you a surprise," he whispered confidentially. "It's for Christmas." With that, he became embarrassed and dashed from the room. He didn't stay after school any more after that.

Finally came the last school day before Christmas. Mark crept slowly into the room late that afternoon with his hands concealing something behind his back. "I have your present," he said timidly when I looked up. "I hope you like it." He held out his hands, and there lying in his small palms was a tiny wooden box.

"Its beautiful, Mark. Is there something in it?" I asked opening the top to look inside. "

"Oh you can't see what's in it," He replied, "and you can't touch it, or taste it or feel it, but mother always said it makes you feel good all the time, warm on cold nights, and safe when you're all alone."

I gazed into the empty box. "What is it Mark," I asked gently, "that will make me feel so good?" "It's love," he whispered softly, "and mother always said it's best when you give it away." And he turned and quietly left the room.

So now I keep a small box crudely made of scraps of wood on the piano in my living room and only smile as inquiring friends raise quizzical eyebrows when I explain to them that there is love in it.

Yes, Christmas is for gaiety, mirth and song, for good and wondrous gifts. But mostly, Christmas is for love.

Sneak Peak: Paw-traits 2010

We specialize in photographing kids. But something we’ve grown into in the last couple of years is taking portraits of the furriest children…that’s right, pets! Last year the Portrait Shoppe introduced its first annual Paw-traits modeling contest: a chance for your dog (or dogs) to come to the Portrait Shoppe and show off their goods with the chance to win some cool prizes. Well, it was such a hit last year that we can hardly wait to start that up again and see more of those adorable canines! Here are some of the basics about the contest:

1) You must be a dog to enter.

2) Your owner must think you’re cute (or pretty, beautiful, handsome, dashing, etc.)

3) You must come to the Portrait Shoppe to have your portrait taken for the contest.

4) One image per session will be chosen and entered into the contest.

5) You may chose to enter into either the Reality or Imagination category, or you may enter both and give yourself double the chance to win!

6) Winners are chosen based on size (small breed, medium breed, large breed) and category, so there are six category winners!

7) All judging will be by PetSuites of Lexington.

8) Contest begins Jan. 1, 2010!

Halloween Fun - Angels and Hippies

We had a BLAST on Halloween! We had a few great sessions, and all in costume, baby! Check out these awesome images from one session with 3 little angels, courtesy of their mom.

The 3rd little angel isn't in these shots because she's only 2, and she wasn't quite up for playing with us. The portraits turned out great, and (as you can plainly see) we had an awesome time! Thanks to Jill for providing us with the pictures from her own camera!

9 Halloween Photography Tips

So it's Saturday evening, your kid's all dressed in full Halloween garb and about to hit up all your neighbors for sweets and holiday goodness, and you want to commemorate this oh-so-adorable event with a few pictures. Here are 9 tips from the photographers at the Portrait Shoppe that may help you capture the mood and feeling of All Hallow's Eve in your portraits:

1. Know what your subject is

There will be no end to the things you can shoot at Halloween: from jack-o-lanterns to scary decorations to kids in costume. Figuring out exactly what it is you want to photograph will make your photographs much more pleasing to look at and easier to understand. Halloween is a time of color, emotion, and its full of all sorts of interesting subjects - take them one at a time , pick one to be your main focus in each shot, that way each one will stand out boldly.

2. Find interesting details to focus on

All good images have something in them that holds the attention of their viewers. Rather than taking all wide shots from 5 feet up, find the details that make the moment memorable. For example, instead of having the kid hold the pillow case of candy up by his head, have him reach in a grab as much as he can and hold it up by his face. That is a much more emotional and exciting photograph! Find the little details about her costume that really make it special and use those as your focal points. Everything you'll see on Halloween will be full of detail - like the point about picking your subject, don't try and focus on too much at once.

3. Fill the frame to increase drama

Zoom in! (But please, whatever you do, DON'T use the "digital zoom" on your camera!) Get in close and fill the frame with your subject. This helps to crowd out unwanted distractions in the background and it heightens the drama of the portrait. Whether its people or objects, getting in close will usually at a good punch to your shot.

4. Experiment with fresh camera angles

It's probably the case that the day after Halloween, photo sharing websites will be filled with images of pumpkins and ghosts with winter coats on that all look very much the same. Make your images stand out by finding fresh angles to shoot from. Try getting super low or super high and see what difference it makes. And if you really feel bold, angle your camera a little bit. The key is to experiment; some angles will be absolutely terrible, some will be a breath of fresh air - play around and see what you like.

5. Pay attention to the background and surroundings

A great picture of your child in costume can be totally ruined by the TV on in the background, or the dishes in the sink peaking out from behind her head. Remember, even though you may only be focused on how cute she may look, your camera is picking up everything in its field of view. Move your subjects in front of a simple background, or one that doesn't have a lot of distractions in it. If you can, remove everything from the scene that doesn't belong in the "period" of the costume: for example, there were no wristwatches in the medieval period, nor were there bookshelves in neverland. One other thing to consider in your surroundings and background is color - something too similar to the costume may blend in to your subjects, but something too different may clash. A little attention to these things ahead of time will result in images that really pop.

6. Turn off your flash (if you can)

No holiday is more dramatic, edgy, and dark than Halloween. Photographing your little ghouls under bright lights or the flash of your camera will severely dampen the effect of this mood that characterizes the holiday. If you can, photograph them in natural light - sunset lighting is AMAZING for these pictures! Make use of interesting light, such as candles, to add a really cool mood to your pictures. Just remember to tell your subjects to keep still while you get the shot!

For those who have cameras with the capability: 1) increase your ISO - the larger your number the more sensitive your image sensor is to light and the darker conditions you can shoot in without having to slow down shutter speed. 2) slow down shutter speed – choosing a longer shutter speed lets more light into your camera. On the downside you’ll see any movement in your shots blur (which might add to the spookiness of the image but could also ruin it). Consider using a tripod if you lengthen your shutter speed. 3) use a larger Aperture – this widens the hole in your lens and lets more available light in. It will also lessen the depth of field in your shots.

7. Jack-0-lanterns

A special note about photographing Jack-o-lanterns: it is particularly tricky to get the full effect of the eerie glowing inside. Instead of just the one candle you keep in there normally, it's probably a good idea to use 2 or 3 for added light. Then set your camera down on a tripod or something sturdy (table, chair, etc.). Don't forget to keep your flash off!

8. All about the attitude

"Hey, look here and smile!" Come on, how many superheroes want to pose like a little kid? Do you really think that a witch is going to try and look pretty for you? This may be your kid's one big chance in the year to bring out their inner actor - let them perform! Ask them to go overboard with attitude...trust me, you're kid knows how to ham it up! Encourage this by addressing them and interacting with them as though they really were Spiderman, or Peter Pan, or Aurora the princess. Kids LOVE this stuff - let them be completely enveloped by their character, and make sure your shots capture the energy they give!

9. Tell the story

Finally, don't just take random photos throughout the night - chronolog the event through your images. Take the before shots of the kids getting into costume; take the after shots of the kid asleep at the Halloween party. Try to get some candid moments of the trick-or-treating and please don't forget to catch the excitement in their faces when they get their first piece of Halloween candy! Photograph the moments, not just the stuff - your images will stand out from the crowd!

The next time you come by our studio, definitely stop by and have your kids put their John Hancock on our front wall (don't worry...if your child doesn't know how to write yet, scribbling is just fine with us!). Seriously - try it! Check it out:

There's a new baby in the Portrait Shoppe family!

Hey everybody! I'd like you to meet the newest member of our family: Micah Paige!

He was born at 5:51 am Tuesday morning, Oct. 6. Mom (Aura) is doing great, and his 3 older siblings are all very excited that he has finally arrived. We're all a little exhausted, but we couldn't be happier!

So now I'm a daddy of 4...wow! That's almost hard to believe! As the t-shirt says, "Life is Good!"

Superhero Week marks the end of September

Boy this has been a crazy month! We danced and dressed up in all kinds of funky costumes. We gave away a Wall Portrait and even made some honorary Portrait Shoppe staff out of your children. Why? Well...sometimes it's nice to celebrate just to celebrate. And that's what September was about for all of us - fun for its own sake!

I wanted to share with you the last of our crazy outfits from this month - it was Superhero Week! Those of you who watched the results of the Wall Portrait giveaway will have already had a preview of Shelly's and my outfit. But, for your viewing pleasure, here are the Superheroes of the Portrait Shoppe, immortalized forever on this blog!

All in all, we had a BLAST!!! Thanks so much for coming by and "playing" along with us.

Today is a very special day! We are giving away a free wall portrait to one of our lucky UKC (that's Unique Kids Club) members who had a photo session during the month of September. Once in a while we get to do something really cool for our UKC's, and this is definitely one of the coolest! So, without further ado: the winner is..........

Set your jukebox back a few decades, and jitterbug away - the Portrait Shoppe is continuing it's Crazy September with 50's week! Currently, our favorite song is "Great Balls of Fire" by Jerry Lee Lewis, a classic rockabilly hit!

Stop by the Portrait Shoppe this week to see some our own versions of the Greasers and Pink Ladies! And who knows...maybe the Fonz will even make an appearance...or Elvis - we'll take either.

THE PIRATES ARE RECRUITING!!!

THIS JUST IN: One of the pirates, a dangerous looking bloke who, as best we can tell, is called "The Dread Pirate Ryan," seems to have recently recruited a first-mate. This new buckaneer looks to be even more dread than Ryan himself. Our advice: stay in your house! Lock your doors! If these pirates continue their rampage at the Portrait Shoppe there's no telling what could become of all our children!

As a famous king of England once said in a movie, "Run Away! RUN AWAY!"

I don't know what's worse - the fact that there are pirates running amok in Lexington, or that they're taking photos of one another!

September is underway - and so is our crazy dress up plan for the month! If you didn't stop by last week you missed what was sure to be the most natural and comfortable of all of our theme weeks - Pajama week! We all got to hang out in our sweat pants and bath robes at work. Here's a snapshot of us that one of our kids took (not OUR kids, of course, one of our Client's kids). Anyway, she caught us as we really were last week!

A loose....no, LOST tooth!

Alright, so the other a client of ours came in to look at her daughter's portraits that we had taken about a week before. She arrived with all 3 girls in tow (all three of whom have been lovely subjects at the Portrait Shoppe before). Her oldest, Erika, just began kindergaten this fall and I haven't seen her since her birthday shoot back in the spring. Well, she comes in with a loose tooth - one of the front ones, too. So I make the bad joke of knocking it out for her. Well, lo and behold, as I pretend to knock her tooth out (I didn't touch her, I SWEAR - you can ask her mom), Erika puts her hand to her mouth and spits out...her TOOTH! Right in front of us! Plenty of kids have come in with loose or missing teeth before, but this was our very first time that a tooth was lost here in the Portrait Shoppe!

Star Kids Modeling Contest Underway!

Beautiful, aren't they? Well, those are all the winners from last years Star Kids Modeling Contest!

Every summer the Portrait Shoppe puts on our very own modeling contest: Star Kids! This is the 6th Annual Star Kids Modeling Competition, and it's going to be awesome! Once again Images modeling agency is going to be doing our judging, and as always a portion of the proceeds from Star Kids every year goes to benefit UK Children's Hospital. Here are the basics you need to know to get you child or children entered into Star Kids:

Dates: May 1st -August 1st - Your portrait session needs to be done within this time period. *Suggestion: get it done early, because the end of July is crazy busy with people trying to cram it in!*)

Ages: 0-12 - We've added an 11 and 12 year old category this year, so you can even bring your older children in!

Categories: 0-11 mo., 12-23 mo., 2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-1, 11-12. Within each age category there are 2 boy winners and 2 girl winners: one reality (traditional) winner, and one imagination (fantasy) winner.

2 Overall winners: one 0verall winner from ages 0-3, and one overall winner from ages 4-12.

How do I get started? Just make an appointment at the Portrait Shoppe - call 859-277-6671 or schedule an appointment online.

What about scenes and outfits? For Star Kids, there are NO RESTRICTIONS! You can wear anything and use any of our scenes - but we have to have individual images, group shots won't work.

How do you choose which image to use? We don't - YOU do. We'll help you of course, and give you suggestions, but the final decision is yours as to which image you want to submit.

What does my child get if he/she wins? Every participant, winner or not, will get a 4x6 of the image they choose and a goodie bag full of prizes, coupons, and discounts at all participating businesses in Lexington. Typically those gift bags are worth somewhere in the vicinity of $100. The category winners will get more substantial prizes: gift certificates, dinners, etc. And the overall winners? Free registration and classes at Images Modeling Agency!

All you have to do to get started is call up the Portrait Shoppe and schedule a photo session before the end of Saturday, August 1st. 859-277-6671. But don't wait too long, or you might not be able to get a spot.

Easter '09

We had an AWESOME time this past Easter! The kids all had such a great time playing with the bunnies and the lamb this year, and they all looked super-cute!

Every session was special, each child brought something unique and wonderful to the images. You can see from the few we have here that they were all so different, and so special.

Our Lamb was named Joey (we're not sure how we picked Joey, but it worked) - he was only 1 week old during the portraits! What a trooper - he lasted through every single portrait session (and the kids thought they had a hard time!). Normally we get 2 lambs, but because Easter was a little later this year, the lambing season was almost over and we were lucky to get this little guy. We were definitely sad to see him go after that weekend.

We had two bunnies this year also. Their names were Siegfried (Ziggy) and Smidge. Smidge was appropriately named because he was only a dwarf. Once during a session with him, one of our clients asked, "he's not going to get much bigger, is he?" And Shelly responded, "maybe just a smidge." Thus, the birth of the name Smidge - most of the time he rode around in the pocket of Shelly's sweatshirt! We got to enjoy them for a couple of weeks. All the kids loved them too!

The kids were amazing this year - they were well behaved, fun, energetic...just overall it was a great group of little people!

Thank you so much for making this a spectacular Easter! We would love to see you all back again next season!

We were given a special treat this particular Easter - Brian's mom Erin took a picture of the photographers with Joey the lamb! This is a picture of Brian (isn't he just adorable?!), his mom Erin, Shelly and Ryan (the two Portrait Shoppe Photographers), and Joey the star of the weekend!
